We can’t quite believe that this is the June edition of our newsletter.

With the opening of the new Borders Railway just a couple of week’s away, access between The Scottish Borders and Edinburgh will never have been easier or quicker. We are all really looking forward to using the railway both for business and pleasure and recognise the commercial opportunity that it will bring too.
In fact, the Borders Railway is arguably the most exciting opportunity to happen for businesses in the Scottish Borders in a generation, one which will open up a huge range of new and potential customers for each and every business in the region. But as with all new business it won’t just come to you handed on a plate, if you want to benefit from the Borders Railway you can’t sit back and wait for it to happen. Well it’s safe to say that Spring has well and truly sprung and as well as the welcome arrival of some lovely warm weather it is also the perfect time to do a little spring cleaning and start afresh.

Well March has certainly come in like a lion, let’s hope that it goes out like a lamb!
We really like this proverb because it’s a good example of how words can make a point and bring a subject to life in a memorable way. So in this month’s edition, we thought it would be a good idea to focus specifically on the importance of using words to get your message out and your story heard.
Now if you regularly read our newsletter you will know that we use a full range of marketing methods to get our clients noticed, from social media to press and PR and everything else in between. But really, when all is said and done, effective marketing always boils down to the same thing – good communication.
But if like many people you know how good your business or product is but struggle to tell your story, haven’t got the time or simply don’t feel comfortable doing it. Since its January we thought we would keep this month’s newsletter as warm and cosy as we can with a case study all about stoves!

This month we have a great story to tell you, in fact many great stories.
We are delighted to be working on a national marketing campaign which aims to promote the fascinating stories about Scotland’s Pubs and Bars. As well as letting you know about this hugely interesting project and how it came about, we thought you would also be interested to find out how we will be promoting these stories to Scotland’s visitors in 2014.
And the pubs and bars of Scotland have certainly got a story to tell, from the Highlands and Islands to the Lowlands and our great cities, there are many great stories waiting to be told. The stories are varied and certainly eclectic; from Robert Burns to Irvine Welsh, The Beatles to The Killers, Roy Rogers and Trigger to Dame Helen Mirren! Whisky Galore to Harry Potter, the birth of whisky to the Stone of Destiny and just about everything else in between.
Fascinating stories to tell and as well as project managing the overall Scotland’s Pubs and Bars campaign we are also delivering key aspects of promotional activity on behalf of The Scottish Licensed Trade Association.
We are sure you will agree, this is a story that is worth telling.

The Summer might not have brought the sunshine we were hoping for but the London Olympics certainly brightened things up in glorious, golden style! And just like everyone else, we enjoyed the Olympic Games and cheering on Team GB.

April is certainly living up to it’s showery reputation right now but here’s hoping we all have a very Bright 2012.

This is our final newsletter of the year and we find ourselves in contemplative mood !
As we approach the end of the year and look ahead to the start of 2012 we thought we it would be interesting to take a look at how consumerism is changing at such a breathtaking rate.
Technology has changed almost every aspect of how we consume – from reading books and newspapers to buying music, how we shop to how we socialise, research products, travel and even complain! And of course marketing has to keep in step with how technology shapes consumer behaviour or be left behind forever.
In this edition we take a fascinating look at some old versus new methods of marketing and discuss issues such as :
Is print still relevant today? Is social media just hype ? Is everything really just the same but different as its always been ?

As the clocks go back at the weekend we thought it was high time we gave you a little update on some of the varied work we’ve been busy with recently.
We are really proud of the diversity of interesting clients that we now have across the country and the range of quality work we have been carrying out on their behalf. From charities to entertainment, retail to tourism, food producers to professional services and communications to agriculture, you name it we have been marketing it !
In the past few months we have been busy completing a number of strategic Marketing Plans for some new and existing clients. We have also carried out evaluation of the Borders Book Festival as outlined below and have developed several exciting new brand identities. And of course we have written and sent out a number of e-newsletters for clients as well as carrying out original marketing campaigns too.

What do you call it when it rains for 40 days and 40 nights – answer British Summer Time !
But let’s not dwell on the weather, in fact the least said the better. Anyway we hope that you have all had a busy and productive Summer and if you did manage to get any time away it was relaxing.
This month we thought we’d give you a round up of some of the projects we have been working on, some very interesting and diverse work including the launch of a new state of the art bingo club, re-branding a lovely local charity and much more besides.

Well here we are nearly at the end of March and Easter is upon us. Business wise we are now at the end of the first quarter of the year. A quarter that was predicted to be tough for businesses as people cut back after Christmas.
You do still need a crystal ball to predict the economy and what the next couple of months is going to bring with experts offering different opinions on whether we will see improvement and encourage more consumer spending or not. What is true though is that customers are being careful on how they spend their money and there is a trend on spending it on companies that they know and trust and this can benefit small to medium businesses like you. But only if you communicate with your customers and potential customers as to why they should spend money with you. As ever in the tourism industry there are some who are saying that 2011 will be a great year for UK Tourism as consumers continue the trend of the Staycation especially for the all important main summer holiday. While others are saying that trading conditions will be tough particularly in the first quarter as the VAT increase takes affect and people reduce their spending post Christmas. In running a business it is hard to know what to believe and even Robert Peston of BBC fame does not have a crystal ball. The reality is that we can see the potential trends and that is useful to know but it doesn’t actually predict what it means for your Hotel. So what do you do? How do you get people to stay with you this year and people to eat in your restaurant and more importantly how do you pay the bills and make a profit at the end of the year?
Well the worst thing you can do is do nothing and hope that people will know who you are and therefore come to stay. If you want people to know about your hotel you need to communicate with them. For obvious reasons the news is full of the economic, political and social implications for 2011. Particularly with the recent increase in VAT and the post analysis of the festive season with close scrutiny on the impact that the Arctic conditions had on business in December too.
Running a business is never easy and sometimes you just want to switch off the news and not listen to the latest predictions. Realistically some of the predictions will come true and some won’t and equally some will affect your business and some won’t. As a business owner though you are in the driving seat of your business and you have two options. Well here we are fast approaching December and Christmas is just around the corner. For many of you this is an extremely hectic time which is good for business but we thought you might want to take ten minutes over a coffee to catch up on the latest marketing news.
In our last newsletter of the year we thought we’d take a look ahead to 2011. We have included a really interesting feature on some key trends that are very likely to shape consumer behaviour next year. Whilst we don’t have a crystal ball this is an accurate way of looking ahead and when we did this a year ago the trends we featured then were Social Networking, the growth of the Staycation and the increasing demand for Local goods and services. These trends have certainly translated into definite consumer behaviour and have become dominant features in the market place.

With the never ending talk of austerity measures and cutbacks these are obviously very uncertain times. There’s absolutely no doubt that this affects us all and for those in private business we really do need to hold our nerve.
But on a much more optimistic note we genuinely believe that those businesses who continue to look after their customers and exceed expectations, who plan ahead properly and show genuine innovation will not only ride out the storm but will have a very bright future indeed.

Well where has the Summer gone as we find ourselves in September already.
If you did manage to enjoy a well earned break we hope that you had a great time and that you are feeling refreshed for the months ahead.
As we travel to other countries and destinations it’s always interesting to see how other businesses look after their customers. It’s great to learn from others and get ideas and sometimes it’s reassuring to know that we are doing a pretty good job anyway.
